2007-01-30 23:56:00abcpatzer14762 Qxf7+ is much stronger, instead of winning a rook it wins the king.
2008-05-06 23:19:59midn1ght1605abcpatzer: except 2...Kh8 spoils that. Crafty's not wrong about tactics very often!
2009-12-05 10:58:52Garryback1679I had the same failing idea of Qxf7
2010-12-07 21:39:45mtracey1533Also fell for 2 Qxf7+ :(
2010-12-26 17:32:53mtal611558ok,crafty solution 2)Rxd8 seems simple clearcut and winning hands down, but for the life of me I can't see anything wrong with 2) Qf7+...Kh8,3) Rxd8,oh hang on a sec!!,after 3)...Rxd8,white not only passes up winning a piece, there's no mate either after 4) Qe8+...Rxe8,5)Rxe8+...Ng8 and black wins.A very deceptive puzzle which is way underrated at 1453.Nah..that's an excuse,Tal my foot!!!-NEVER EVER...
2012-01-16 11:40:32MaltaCross12783.Rxd8 wins a tempo because it leads to the check 4.Rxf8+. It is because of this tempo that White wins material.
2012-04-06 23:47:51mtal611558got this right again, but it cost me some time and points trying to decide between two lines of play.Quickly spotted the schwizenzug idea winning material but too be honest I felt a strong pull towards the cute mating idea only to notice at the last second the knight moving backwards to block the check after I'd already sac'ked my Q.That was close, thin dividing line between winning and losing eh lol
2012-04-14 13:32:05finnegan1187Qxf7 is better
2013-10-12 19:38:28mtracey15333 years later, still fell for 2 Qxf7
2014-01-18 07:58:36midn1ght1605Ok, let's be clear. Black's first move is 1...Nxd4?. White must reply 2.Rxd4. Now if 2...Qxc5??, 3.Rxd8 wins cleanly (Rxd8 Qxf7+). Whereas 3.Qxf7? does not win immediately due to 3...Kh8. @abcpatzer started the wrong move numbering (but I continued it!)
2014-01-18 11:19:35floreatdunum1702Important point to note is that the White king is on h1, g1. Therefore Qxf2 is not check, allowing White to play Rxf8, before recapturing the queen.
2017-05-17 15:57:15evanhao1552I saw that Qxf7+ doesn't work so I did RxN.
